Each year, we produce 292.4 million tons of trash in the USA. That breaks down to about 5 pounds per person per day. The amount of trash we produce is having a big impact on the environment. As trash decomposes, it releases greenhouses gases that contribute to climate change. By reducing waste, we can reduce the amount of garbage that is going into landfills and creating more greenhouse gases.
Your challenge: Be aware of how much trash you are producing on an average day. Think of ways that you can reduce the amount of trash that you are creating and put those ideas into action. For example, can you bring your own bag to the store and avoid using a disposable plastic bag or you can stop using disposable water bottles. For your video, tell us what you learned about the amount of trash you create each day and the actions you took to reduce it.
